This Autumn, travel back to Roman London with LONDINIUM: a season of gripping events and activities this summer. Explore the City of London’s Roman heritage with gladiator games, 3D animated projections,, outdoor films, archaeological tours in historic London sites, and talks by leading historians, including SIMON ELLIOTT, author of Military History Monthly’s book of the year, ‘Sea Eagles of Empire’, and ‘Empire State: How the Roman Military Built an Empire‘, recently published by Oxbow Books.

21st September: The History of Roman London to the End of the 2nd Century AD.
Join Roman London expert Simon Elliott to hear about the early history of the settlement. Learn how it was founded, its destruction during the Boudiccan Revolt and subsequent recovery, and how it matured to become a key commercial and administrative centre. Simon will also discuss Londinium’s role in the governance of Britannia, and how it facilitated the flow of wealth to the Imperial centre.

12th October: Everyday Life in Roman London
Hear Simon Elliott narrate a day in the life of Roman Londoners from the mid-2nd century AD. Set at the time of the city’s height during the Roman occupation, Elliott will shine a light on day-to-day life in Londinium, from a variety of different perspectives. Discover how certain experiences of a Roman Londoner might mirror those of a modern one, whilst others would be alien.

2nd November: Later Roman London and the End of Roman Britain
The capital of Britannia, Londinium governed the relatively integrated Southern and Eastern areas, as well as the militarised border regions of the North and West. This far flung territory of Rome changed over time, and eventually slipped out of the Imperial control. In this talk Simon Elliott tells the tale of Roman London from the ‘Crisis of the 3rd Century’ until its final demise in the early 5th century.
